Pathophysiology of Heart Disease: ACollaborative Project of Medical Students and Faculty represents a refreshingand innovative departure in the preparation of a medical text. Students—theintended user—dissatisfed with currently available textbooks on cardiology, madetheir needs clear. They need to understand the pathophysiology ofcardiovascular disorders, and how the pathophysiology leads to key clinical andlaboratory findings and to the rationale or management. Fortunately, theirpleasell on receptive ears. Dr. Leonard Lilly, a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, who is a brilliant teacher and a respected cardiologistat the Brigham and Women’s and Faulkner Hospitals, has served as the senior editorof this project. He has brought together a group of talented Harvard medicalstudents and aculty who have collaborated closely to produce this superbintroductory text specif cally designed to meet the needs of medical studentsduring their initial encounters with patients with heart disease. Dr. Lilly, who was a co-author of most of the chapters made certain that there were norepetitions or major gaps, as so often occurs with multi-authored texts. While Pathophysiologyo Heart Disease is not meant to be encyclopedic or all inclusive, it is remarkablythorough.
Revised and updated for its Fifth Edition,Pathophysiology of Heart Disease delivers a concise, easy-to-understandintroduction to cardiovascular diseases. This best-selling text is written byinternationally recognized Harvard Medical School faculty and select medicalstudents and specifically designed to meet the needs of medical students duringtheir initial encounters with patients with heart disease. This edition hasimproved consistency of coverage and level of detail and enhancedillustrations.
The original motivation or writing this book was the need or such a text voiced by our medical students, as well as their desire to participate in its creation and direction. Consequently, the book’s development is unusual in that it represents a close collaboration between Harvard medical students and cardiology aculty, who shared in the writing and editing o the manuscript. The goal o this pairing was to ocus the subject matter on the needs of the student, while providing the expertise of our aculty members. In this updated and rewritten sixth edition of Pathophysiology of Heart Disease, the collaborative effort has continued between a new generation of medical students and our cardiovascular aculty.
The introductory chapters of the book review basic cardiac anatomy and physiology and describe the tools needed or understanding clinical aspects of subsequently presented material. The remainder of the text addresses the major groups of cardiovascular diseases. The chapters are designed and edited to be read in sequence but are suficiently cross-re erenced so that they can also be used out of order. The final chapter describes the major classes of cardiovascular drugs and explains the physiologic rationale or their uses.

READER’S REVIEWS
“If there isone book you should read cover-to-cover as a preclinical medical student, it'sthis book. I don't care how your curriculum is set up, but when you arestudying heart disease, this is the book you should have and it should be yourchief source. Hopefully your school knows how awesome this book is and has itlisted as the required reading for your cardio block. This is, hands-down, the best textbook I have read in medicalschool. It goes into just enough depth with the concepts without diving toodeeply into physiology that isn't important or practical. It is comprehensiveenough that you don't need any other source, really, when studyingcardiovascular pathophysiology. The chapter on EKGs is probably the onlyexception, because Dubin's book is superior and more idiot-proof. But overall, you will be a rock star if you read this thing cover-to-cover. It also sets upa tremendously strong foundation of knowledge for when you later hunker down tostudy for Step 1. A good understanding of the principles laid out in this bookvirtually ensures a strong performance on cardiology that will appear on Step 1. Aside from the terrific content, the layout is nice, and itis very readable. So many useful diagrams and pictures. So, in summation, if you are a preclinical med student, buythis book and read it. It's amazing.
“Read thisbook cover to cover for my cardiology block in med school and did very well along with some Fundamental Cardiovascular Books PDF. If you'reusing it for a test I would recommend supplementing it with clinical vignettesin order to integrate the material and practice, but everything you need toknow is in the book. It has more details than you'll be asked but it allows youto understand the concepts rather than just memorizing trivial information. Love thisbook.”

“I originallybought this for my cardiology block during MS2. This was an amazing book thatcovered just about everything I needed to know about cardiology, but alsoprovided the basic science and mechanisms of the disease process. It was arelatively easy read. I love this book because I didn't really have to memorizeeverything anymore; once I picked up on the logic of how the heart works andwhat can go wrong, you can figure out just about everything from that. The oneissue I have is that the coverage of ECGs was more limited than I had wanted. I would Rapid Interpretations of ECGs by Dale Dubin for that.
'I also used thisduring my acute coronary block during MS3, which was extremely helpful.Certainly, doesn't provide all the treatment regimens like specific doses, butit provided me with a very good understanding of the mechanisms and also helpedme a lot with some of the more obscure pimping questions.”
